Goodman was born in Peoria, Illinois, on November 27, 1863, to
John Goodman of New York and Mary Hill. He attended school in Peoria and
Bondville.On April 6,1887, he married Ella Cade of Seymour, Illinois, the
daughter of Simon Cade (England) and Sarah Ashcroft (Ohio). He traveled
to California and toured California, eventually buying 964 acres north east
of Butte City. As a farmer, he was noted forhaving the most modern machinery; a 75 H-P Caterpillar engine and a combined harvester. Desiring to give his five children, Howard, Elmer, Brian, Ira and Hubert, the advantage of city schools, he moved to the Chico Vecino and erected the house at the corner of 4th and The Esplanade. As a resident of Chico, he was progressive and a leader in having the telephone line built and in securing the new county road by giving a strip 60 feet wide and a mile and a half long and in working to have the Chico Vecino annexed to the City. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a supporter of Democratic candidates. While in Illinois he was the Postmaster of Bondville and township school treasurer. He died in Chico on May 5, 1917. Following his death, Ella Goodman continued to look after the Goodman interests and operated the ranch demonstrating much business ability. |
George
Vogelsang was born in Fulton, New York, September 16, 1867, the
youngest of eight children of Frederick and Margaretta Vogelsang. He came
to California at the age of seventeen. He lived in Stockton for a short
time; moved to San Francisco and worked on streetcars; he then moved to
Tehama County where he worked on the Rhiland Ranch. |
